The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Film Department will present a free screening and filmmaker''s discussion of the film, “Free China: The Courage
to Believe,” Friday, March 22 at 6:45 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center auditorium on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

From award-winning director Michael Perlman, “Free China” examines widespread human rights violations in China through the remarkable stories of Jennifer Zeng, a mother and former Communist Party member; Dr. Charles Lee, a Chinese- American businessman; and hundreds of thousands of peaceful citizens who are imprisoned, tortured and subjected to slave labor for their spiritual beliefs.

The film highlights how Internet technologies are aiding human rights activists around the world, by allowing uncensored information into closed societies.

The film also sheds light on how a re-emergence of traditional Chinese culture and spirituality are helping bring about a new China.

Among a series of six film screenings at Southern Miss Gulf Coast, “Free China: The Courage to Believe” is part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers.

The tour is a program of South Arts, a nonprofit regional arts organization which strives to build on the south''s unique heritage and enhance the public value of the arts. Southern Circuit screenings are funded in part by a grant from South Arts, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

Admission is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact Dixon McDowell at 601.818.0818 or scott.mcdowell@usm.edu.
